DescriptionImage of a painting depicting a gas station with uniformed attendants cleaning windows of cars as they refuel.Gallery Label

Dow photographed this painting at a gas station in Georgia. Several attendants in crisp, white uniforms pump gas and wipe windshields in a clean, well-organized outdoor setting.

As car travel became the preferred mode of transportation for many Americans, gas stations evolved from basic roadside fueling pumps common in the early 1900s to the full-service rest stops we know today. In addition to providing oil checks, air for tires, and car washes, gas stations offered refreshments, restrooms, and hot meals to road-weary travelers.
