Gallery LabelThe rounded forms and gentle recesses in Night Land suggest the rocks and pools of water in a classical Japanese garden. They also recall the artist's designs for parks and urban plazas. In shape and color, the sculpture resembles a suzuri, a traditional stone used in Japan, China and Korea for grinding sticks of ink. It further suggests a lunar landscape of organic forms similar to those used by Surrealist painters with whom Isamu Noguchi was acquainted. In title, Night Land evokes a mysterious, imaginary and mythical dreamscape.
