DescriptionImage of the Flatiron Building with trees in the lower right corner. Image taken from a high vantage point looking down onto street with pedestrians, cars, and an open top tour bus. This oversized daguerreotype is housed in a custom black frame without a mat.Exhibition HistoryRotation 26. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, March 29, 2019- August 25, 2019, no cat.
The daguerreotype is the world’s first photographic process. Today, a few skilled practitioners still use it as a means of contemporary artistic expression. This large, brilliant, and microscopically detailed work testifies to the continued creative relevance of a process first introduced to the public in 1839. Mesmerized by the unique physical properties of the daguerreotype, Spagnoli has used this unique and demanding technique since the mid-1990s.
