DescriptionImage of rooftops from above. Tiles, bricks, and diagonal rooflines intersect to create linear designs and abstract shapes.Gallery Label

This carefully composed, soft-focus photograph of Princeton University’s campus rooftops is an example of the abstract design principles taught at the Clarence White School of Photography in New York where Bernard Horne studied. Horne photographed the rooftops from an elevated angle, emphasizing their intersecting geometric forms, making the familiar appear unfamiliar. The independently wealthy Horne was able to freely dedicate himself to photography, attending the highly influential art school from 1916–1917 and later serving as an instructor.
