DescriptionImage of rippling water creating scale-like forms with larger black masses gathered near the top.Gallery LabelSusan Derges trained as a painter before turning to photography—specifically to cameraless photography. Interested in photographically documenting the movement of water in a natural setting, Derges visited the River Taw near her home in western England. There, she placed large sheets of color photographic paper beneath the surface of the river to catch the patterns made by the movement of water. Derges uses the most primitive photographic processes to address a contemporary issue: our relationship to the environment.
