DescriptionImage of a woman and two young girls standing next to black foundation wall surrounded by dirt and rocks. The girls are barefoot and wear dresses. A row of trees mostly obscure the house in the background.Exhibition HistoryRotation 25. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, October 19, 2018- March 17, 2019, no cat.
Though best known for her large-format color photographs of her upper-class family and friends, Tina Barney has also explored similar subjects in black-and-white film. The lack of color removes the potential for what Barney calls "sentimental" distractions. Instead, the graphic contrasts of light and shadow create different formal relationships. As the title of this piece suggests, Barney’s primary interest is the black wall of a building foundation at the left of the composition, not the three figures at right.
