DescriptionThis image is based on an unmodulated ground of warm, glowing orange over which very small dots of orange-red appear to have been sprayed on to create a more or less uniform pattern. This configuration extends evenly from one side of the print to the other and from top to bottom. A small touch of pale purple has been added at one edge of the print.Gallery LabelJules Olitski was a Color Field painter and printmaker. He established his reputation in the 1960s when he began to use a spray gun to mist sheer fields of color over large-scale canvases. So dispersed was the mist of paint that it seemed to have been breathed onto the surface. The artist then painted thin lines around the edge of the canvas, subtly framing the shimmering color. These four prints, a gift from the artist’s wife, Kristina Olitski, correspond to his signature painting technique.
