DescriptionGelatin silver print toned with tea. Ethereal image with darkened corners of calm river surrounded by trees with a single stick emerging from the center and reflections in the water.Exhibition HistoryRotation 27. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, August 23, 2019–February 2, 2020, no cat.
Sally Mann has documented her native Virginia for more than 30 years as a means of navigating its complicated past. To create her landscapes, Mann uses the wet collodion process, a photographic process dating to the Civil War. She embraces the imperfections of the method, including chemical spills and processing flaws, which instill a moody quietness to the work. For Mann, the process alludes to themes of memory, loss, and history.
