Gallery LabelThis quiet, meticulous study of a single upturned mushroom reveals the young George Copeland Ault's extraordinary command of watercolor technique. Ault began by faintly sketching a graphite underdrawing for the mushroom. Its form was then carefully described with fine brushwork and shades of brown. The tablecloth is made of pale gray washes, and its folds are defined by areas with fewer coats of paint. Ault created the flat wash of the richly colored green background by evenly moving a brush across the length of the page.
