DescriptionAbstract image of kraft paper with a circle cut in the center; the paper circle is then crumpled towards the upper left where it is still attached to the larger sheet.Gallery LabelCan photographs stand in for the objects they record?
To create the paper models for this work, Jerry McMillan carved simple geometric shapes into brown kraft paper and crumpled the edges to create dimensionality. He photographed the cutouts using black-and-white film, then printed and toned the images using a sulfide duo-tone process to emulate the color of the kraft paper. The final print appears as a replica of the original, but is actually a multi-layered photographic transformation.
