Jan Groover once stated: “formalism is everything.” Her succinct pronouncement encapsulated her approach to large-format photography, which prioritized the visualization of formal relationships between objects. This work derives from her Kitchen Still Life series. To produce the work, Groover meticulously arranged cutlery, baking tools, and plants for the camera. She experimented with focus, lighting, and the interplay between reflective and opaque surfaces. The resulting composition provides a fresh, dynamic take on the traditional still life genre.
