DescriptionA black and white overview of a playground with a distorted perspective. There are three children swinging at the top of the page, with a group of spectators at center right, while the mid ground is filled with fences trees, other natural things, and the bottom area is a series of stairways. All seen from above.Gallery LabelPeter Milton’s Pastorale is an imaginative depiction of people in an urban, park-like landscape. Its meaning is intentionally ambiguous. In the upper left, three people are swinging, but the activity takes place at a dizzying height and within an unreal spatial context. To the right, a group of men wave frantically. The image is replete with distortions of space and multiple points of perspective. Milton is known for his unique interpretation of Surrealist tendencies, which often play on bizarre juxtapositions of space, time and human activities. His prints are also characterized by their microscopic detail and pictorial complexity. Milton’s hyper-real technique is calculated to evoke a sense of surprise.
