Placing his camera at street level, Ray Metzker chose discarded cardboard as the focal point for this photograph, putting the women crossing the street and surrounding buildings in the background out of focus. This unique vantage point positions the central woman in the photograph so that she is surrounded by bright light on this remarkably quiet street in downtown Chicago.
Metzker began photographing Chicago’s central business district in the late 1950s while studying photography with Harry Callahan at the Institute of Design.
