Richard Learoyd’s work is the product of a distinctly unusual process. Utilizing a variation on the classic camera obscura idea, he creates life-sized images inside a specifically built, room-sized camera. This approach allows him to capture the image directly, without any interposing film negative or transparency. Light is directly focused by the camera onto a large sheet of direct-positive photographic paper. As a result, every image is unique. Learoyd considers the method he uses to be a natural step in search of the ultimate image, not only in its ability to create a likeness but also in the object’s ability to translate the intention of the maker.
