DescriptionImage of a bearded man wearing a suit and standing on the sidewalk beside a tall building. He holds a top hat in one hand and a cane in the other. He turns to look at the viewer.Gallery LabelWith a cane in one hand and a top hat in the other, a dapper Charles Nègre poses for his camera. Educated as a painter, Nègre regularly exhibited his paintings throughout the 1840s and 1850s in the Paris Salon des Beaux-Arts exhibitions. He turned to photography in the mid-1840s. This self-portrait reveals the influence of his artistic training, evidenced by the way he renders himself in the foreground with sharper details while he allows the background to blur.
