One of the inventors of photography, William Henry Fox Talbot first made a permanent camera image in 1835. By 1841, he had patented the calotype technique, allowing multiple positive prints to be made from a single paper negative. His 1844–1846 publication The Pencil of Nature was the first book illustrated with original photographs. As this elegantly composed work demonstrates, Talbot was not only an inventor: he was also a brilliant photographer.
