DescriptionPlain silk ground with paste resist dyeing, silk and metallic thread embroidery. Scenes of famous places of Kyoto including Kiyomizudera and Gojo Bridge on the back.Gallery Label
Famous places attract tourists and artists alike. Artists in Japan depicted a set of famous sites in a variety of media, including robes like the one on display. Due to increased interest in tourism, robes depicting tourist destinations became popular among wealthy women in the 1700s. Here, we see famous sites in Kyoto. At the top, the famed wooden stage of the Kiyomizu temple peeks out from a steep hillside. Gojō Bridge at the bottom has been legendary since the late 1100s. These iconic sites would have been instantly recognizable to the wearer and others.
