At the end of the 1868 season, the entire survey party reassembled near Salt Lake City. Here, O'Sullivan photographed various members of the survey, including its leader. Clarence King's outfit reveals something of his character: he was at once an experienced explorer and a bit of a dandy-a man of science, the arts and letters and polite culture.
