DescriptionImage of a woman lying in the grass with eyes closed; above her is a cloud filled sky with a giant rock appearing to float in the center.Gallery LabelDecades before the widespread use of digital manipulation software, Jerry Uelsmann pioneered a "non-purist" approach to photography. By 1959, he was constructing photographs from multiple negatives. Uelsmann’s composite images read as unified scenes, without visible splices between their component parts.
Uelsmann has said, "My work just documents states of consciousness and feelings and things that are very hard to articulate." Here, Uelsmann creates a dreamlike scene, a seemingly objective record of impossible encounters.
