Moving northward out of Nevada, O'Sullivan and several others crossed into Idaho at the City of Rocks. Emigrants on their way to California referred to this area as one of the scenic wonders of the journey. O'Sullivan photographed several of the unusual structures, which rose to a height of more than 500 feet. At roughly 2.5 billion years of age, these rocks are among the oldest in the Western United States.
