A product of geothermal activity, hot springs were of great interest to the survey's geologists. The heat from the steaming water and the accompanying sulphuric haze created an eerie, empty landscape nearly void of vegetation. Here, O'Sullivan's wagon and portable dark-tent (where he sensitized and developed his glass-plate negatives) are included as key elements in an otherwise stark composition.
