As the assistant to the art director of Harper’s Bazaar, Lillian Bassman worked with noted fashion photographers like Richard Avedon and Arnold Newman. In 1947, she left this position to puruse her own photography. Bassman forged a uniquely delicate and impressionistic style, employing unusual techniques such as printing through tissue to evoke a mood of graceful vitality.
