DescriptionThe New York Daily News cover from May 7, 1937. The headline reads: "Hindenburg Explodes 33 die in airship".Gallery Label
On May 6, 1936, the German airship Hindenburg attempted to dock at a U.S. Naval Station in New Jersey when it caught fire and exploded. Within 47 seconds, the dirigible had completely disappeared in flames. Thirty-six passengers and crew members died. Photographer Charles Hoff, on assignment for the Daily News, took one exposure of the tragedy as it unfolded and immediately sent his film to the newspaper. The following day, Hoff’s dramatic photograph appeared in newspapers around the world, becoming a defining image of the horrific event.
