Deeply fascinated by time, Lewis DeSoto’s photographs examine, in his words, “the notions that man has about his existence in relation to the particular and to the infinite.” Here, DeSoto juxtaposes the safe, comforting presence of a house with the expansiveness of the universe, represented by the celestial image projected onto the structure. Although the gap between mankind and the surrounding universe seems vast, DeSoto maintains that we are all connected, individual expressions of the same forces and processes. The star tracks in the sky, resulting from a long exposure, underscore DeSoto’s continued interest in time and man’s place within the cosmos.
