This soft-focused image characterizes the Pictorialist sensibility of Thomas O’Conor Sloane. Pictorialism was a movement that took hold in artistic photographic circles between 1880 and 1920. Distinguished by the use of soft focus, romantic or symbolist themes, and handcrafted processes, Pictorialism aimed to make photography look more like painting. Sloane achieved national recognition in 1900, when he was included in the prestigious Chicago and Philadelphia Salons.
