DescriptionImage of a still life with decanter, glass, and round fruit.Gallery LabelThe interplay of light, shadow, and form gives this still life a simple, distilled beauty. Heinrich Kühn used soft focus and lighting that produced subtle tonal shifts to transform ordinary subjects into high art. Kühn mastered several challenging processes to elevate photographs beyond mundane documentation. This attention to the aesthetic or emotional qualities of a photograph made him a key figure of the Pictorialist movement in the early 1900s.
