DescriptionImage of a rock, balanced upon its natural pedestal, centered in the frame. Mountains slope down from the left edge of the frame and a strip of clouds fills the center of the sky.Exhibition HistoryRotation 8. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, May 12 – October 11, 2010, no cat.
Mark Klett has long been interested in the physical and visual history of the American West. As part of the Rephotographic Survey Project (1977–1979), Klett located the precise vantage points used by landscape photographers working during the 1800s, such as William Bell. Klett’s contemporary view of Perched Rock, as compared with Bell’s original image, reveals the individual stylistic choices that inform documentary records.
