Wynn Bullock is known for his poetic studies of nature and the human figure. In images such as this, Bullock suggests a kind of cosmic mystery, a suggestion of the endless universe in the mud surface of a tide pool.
Bullock’s first passion had been music. His interest shifted to photography and art in the late 1920s while training as a singer in Paris. By the 1950s–60s, he was a revered figure in West Coast photography, and was friends with other noted photographers, such as Ansel Adams and Minor White.
