This dignified portrait of a young Albanian woman in native attire conveys the deep respect Lewis Hine paid to his subjects. Beginning in 1904, Hine produced an important series of pictures at Ellis Island, a project spurred by then-current political debates over immigration. His records of these new arrivals unite the aims of the ethnographic image and the formal studio portrait.
