Siskind began in photography in the mid-1930s, working in the social documentary mode. In the early 1940s, his interest shifted dramatically, from factual to metaphorical concerns. From this new perspective, the most trivial subjects had the potential to serve as symbols of the human condition-to suggest the uncertainty, longing and dread that characterize every life. Siskind himself stated that his photographs represent a symbolic quest to resolve "the sometimes fierce, sometimes gentle, but always conflicting forces" of life. In this work, the isolated detail testifies to the passage of time.
