The Photographs of Ray K. Metzker. Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, January 15 - June 5, 2011, no cat.
Ray Metzker's black and white photographs strike a unique balance between formal brilliance, optical innovation and a deep human regard for the objective world. A student at the acclaimed Institute of Design in Chicago in the late 1950s, Metzker studied with the legendary teaching team of Aaron Siskind and Harry Callahan. In this urban street scene, Metzker brilliantly divides the picture into two separate but related components, creating a powerful interplay of opposites: light and shadow, black and white, male and female.
