DescriptionImage of a woman as turns away from the viewer towards a crowded sidewalk. She is wearing a dark jacket, holding a paper sack, and her hair is pinned up at the nape of her neck. A man stands behind her and looks into a store window.Gallery Label

The connecting thread across a lifetime of Dorothea Lange’s photographs is a deep empathy for the human condition and keen eye for physical expression in unguarded moments. In this photograph, Lange invites us to consider an anonymous woman, accentuating the fine details of her hair, jacket, and paper package illuminated by the sun.

Though best known for her searing, socially conscious images of the Great Depression (1929–1939), such as Migrant Mother, and Japanese internment (1942–1946), Dorothea Lange also photographed in America’s city streets throughout her career.
