Both printed manuals provided an affordable resource for students aspiring to learn the styles of early master painters. The Ten Bamboo Studio gives simple instructions on handling a brush to create images, such as the types of grass displayed in the second print. Published 50 years later, The Mustard Seed Garden includes many volumes dedicated to the instruction of painting. The first volume covers the use of painting tools and materials: brushes, ink and pigments. The next several volumes explain the type of images such as trees, rocks, birds, flowers and figures, through either samples by early masters or step-by-step instruction.
