Near Monterrey combines characteristics of Jessiejo Eckford’s two favorite mediums: woodcut and watercolor. The strong contrast of black ink and light paper, synonymous with woodcuts, creates broad, hazy passages suggesting free-flowing watercolor washes. Due to the effects of this technique, the woodcut can seem ambiguous without close looking. Details like wheel spokes, a tail and hat suggest a cart, a burro and a human figure.
