DescriptionLozenge- and square-shaped resist dye patterns cover this red textile. Beige fabric outlines each horizontal edge, and this fabric is embroidered with organic shapes in dark brown thread. Alternating black and white rectangles decorate each of the textile's vertical ends.Gallery Label
This woman's ceremonial skirt has been dyed using a tie-resist technique. Prior to immersion in the dye bath, small sections of the raffia cloth are tightly bound to prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric.  Red is the color of mourning, and raffia skirts are primarily worn and displayed at funerals.
