DescriptionForeground, center, half-length hatted figure in black facing left. Top left corner, two black feet, one of them with partial leg, both wearing skates pointing down. Top right corner, black foot with skate pointing right. Grayish-yellow background of striated wood grain. Random white dots suggest snow. Shadows from skate blades in darker gray.Gallery LabelChristopher Brown produces images from personal recollections and from photographs he has taken, creating large-scale paintings and prints featuring irrational, dream-like landscapes where scale and distance produce surreal juxtapositions. In this work, we see severely cropped views of three skaters captured at an angle from above. The silhouette of a man moves into our frame of vision as the skates of two people in front of us move out and into the picture plane. These extreme angles give the viewer a dizzying sense of speed. The reduced palette of dark tones and watery grays with flecks of falling snow heightens the sense of isolation and cold.
