Gallery LabelChildren play along the seashore during spring and autumn. The ocean runs across the screens creating a single composition, suggesting spatial continuity of the pair of screens. But the seasonal scenes are complementary rather than continuous. Maruyama Ōkyo was one of Kyoto’s pre-eminent painters of landscape, who conjured up romantic notions of rural life in idyllic scenery.
