DescriptionCylindrical jar made of rough slabs of clay. about one-third of the way down from the top. brown/red/yellow clay on which has irregularly been poured white, black, and orange glazes with bubbles and craters. somewhat smoother. rim and has a hollow knob like a vase form.Gallery LabelAs longtime chairman of the Kansas City Art Institute Ceramics Department, Ken Ferguson taught the importance of both technical proficiency and aesthetic experimentation. This work represents Ferguson's ability to play the functionality and stability of the lidded jar form against the highly textured, free-flowing glaze and slightly slumped form of the vessel. Ferguson's body of work illustrates his personal philosophy, "I enjoy the versatility of clay. For this reason I work with functional and nonfunctional forms…I try to be honest with myself and honest with the clay."
