In the 1930s, Irwin D. Hoffman devoted himself to describing life in Latin America. He traveled to the American Southwest, Puerto Rico and Mexico. In Rodeo, Hoffman focused on the skills of vaqueros (cowboys). The fence and the male spectators who surround it form a frame that barely contains the action at the center of the ring. Hoffman invites us to become part of the audience by making a break in this loose oval, found at the lower edge of the etching.
