Gallery LabelJames Abbott McNeill Whistler made multiple portraits of blacksmith George Govier while working in Lyme Regis. Govier’s forge was on the same street as Whistler’s studio, and the artist executed The Master Smith while chatting with Govier. He also drew Govier at work. In The Old Smith’s Story, Govier stands over the furnace while his son, Samuel, works the bellows.
