The central panel of this tray is a painted blue and green garden scene where two seated gentlemen converse while a servant safeguards a nearby horse. The scene was commonly used on expensive lacquerwares created in the 1500s to 1600s. In addition to the sumptuous lacquer painting, the underside of the tray is made of basketry panels woven with thin strips of bamboo and inlaid with gold floral patterns throughout.
