NOTES:
[1] Asad Rustum was a Professor of History at the American University of Beirut from 1927 to 1943. He was known primarily for his work on the history of the Eastern Church, Syria, Lebanon, and the city of Iskandarūn. He was also instrumental in building the manuscript collections of the American University’s libraries.
[2] The purchase of this object is included on a list of acquisitions made by Laurence Sickman during his trip from China to the United States in the spring of 1935. Sickman had just concluded his time as a Harvard-Yenching Fellow and purchasing agent for the Nelson-Atkins in Peking from 1931 to 1935, and was about to take up the position of the museum’s first Curator of Asian Art. Nelson-Atkins Archives, RG02 Department of Asian Art Records, box 8, folder 29. For reasons that are currently unknown, the object was not formerly accessioned into the museum’s collection until 1943.
