This piece is a brocade, a weaving technique that employs supplemental weft threads (horizontal threads) to create a pattern. Here, the weft threads are yellow and they float on top of the blue linen ground cloth to create the lozenges. This process produces a reversible fabric, as the supplemental threads float both above and below the ground cloth.
