Gallery LabelChilde Hassam, an important American Impressionist painter, turned to printmaking late in his career. The Giant Elm, Easthampton is an example of how he captured the quivering, dappled sunlight synonymous with Impressionism in his etchings using a dizzying array of short, crisp lines of every character. This multitude of dynamic lines recalls the active, broken brushwork associated with Impressionist paintings. These qualities of Impressionism made Hassam’s prints particularly appealing in the early 1900s.
