Gallery LabelSir Frank Short was president of the Royal Society of Etchers in London. This view of a coastal harbor town is inspired by Whistler’s Thames views, like Black Lion Wharf. The quayside retreating in steep perspective is a motif found in some 17th-century Dutch topographical drawings. As in David Young Cameron’s Kincardine, a feeling of great space is conveyed by leaving much of the surface bare of detail.
