DescriptionRed silk pile on a background originally of metal thread and yellow silk. All the metal thread is missing. The panel has been put together from two selvedge widths of velvet, but the component pieces are patched and joined in places.Gallery LabelThis large panel is an example of the bold floral patterning typical of Renaissance velvets. During this period of exploration and travel, trade expanded and Italy and Spain emerged as major centers of textile production. This panel displays one of the widely used, standardized patterns with large, red, ogee arches (opposed curved arcs) that envelope pomegranates, connected by thick serpentine stems across a flat cream background. The dominant motifs are supported by interlacing vegetation and abstract floral elements.
