Gallery Label
A woman with two painted canvases tucked under her arms walks along a cobblestone street in the artistic neighborhood of Montmartre, Paris. She could be a trottin (or errand runner) picking up merchandise for her employer. But the luxury of her fur-trimmed coat and hat with a silver buckle and extravagant ostrich plumes indicates that she is more likely a customer. Auguste Roedel and the printer E. Malfeyt et Cie worked in and produced illustrations of Montmartre. Roedel used this image to advertise the Moulin de la Galette (below). In 1870, the Moulin was transformed from a flour mill into a fashionable dance hall frequented by artists.
