This ornament might represent a Middle Eastern city with a mosque, which allowed consumers in the 1800s to fantasize about the British empire from the comfort of their parlors. It might also be a loosely imagined version of Cortachy Castle, in Angus, Scotland, a fifteenth-century building that underwent a fanciful renovation campaign in 1820.
