Four hundred years ago, a wealthy Chinese purchased this box. It was clearly a luxury article: brass trimmings strengthen the woven sides and the lacquered top is beautifully decorated with a scene depicting the legendary flute player Xiao Shi. We don’t know what she or he kept in it, but it must have been something precious. What would you keep in it?
