DescriptionGreen glazed vase with bulbous body tapering to narrow neck and flaring mouth. Narrow leaf-like forms twist up from the body to attach to the vase's lip. Leaves are free from the body of the vase for about three-quarters of their length.Gallery Label

Here, a vase is enveloped with swirling, stylized iris leaves. Its green, crystalline glaze was a trademark of Gates Potteries and was applied with an airbrush to emphasize the vase’s mold-made form. This combination of classic shapes and abstracted forms from nature was common in the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This work was part of the Teco line (from terracotta) of the Gates Potteries, and was an important contribution to that movement.
